Competing and debuting on the same card as her husband, Cheyanne Buys (5-1) is a high-profile prospect. Buys is coming into the UFC after a dominating performance last Summer on the “Dana White’s Contender Series.” Outside of the show, Buys has fought in the US for LFA and Invicta FC, in South Africa for EFC, and in Canada for BTC, where she earned a strawweight belt. Although she has only six pro fights, Buys has a lot of experience.

Buys is fighting Montserrat Ruiz who is also making her debut and on short notice.

Buys is someone I’ve been high on since her pro debut. Buys on the feet has excellent footwork with beautiful combinations ending with kicks. She is a volume fighter and a solid counter striker as well. Buys has solid wrestling and it’s slightly overrated. She has a good top position and her ground and pound is fight-changing. Buys has a bright future – being only 25-years-old and training out of Fortis MMA the sky is the limit.

Buys was extremely entertaining in her “Contender Series” fight with Hilarie Rose. She beat up Rose and made an easy case for a contract. UFC is always looking at adding talent at to the women’s strawweight division, especially with a bunch of their good fighters either taking fights at flyweight or moving up entirely. She has shown striking and wrestling and she is extremely aggressive. People will knock her level of competition, but that isn’t entirely true. She fought Gillian Robertson as a 20-year-old amateur and Vanessa Demopoulos as a 21-year-old. She lost both, but it’s hard to hold those against her at that age.

After she and her husband, JP, became the first married couple to compete on the same LFA card, the two will get to be the second married couple to share the octagon on the same night. Buys is pretty solid all-around. Coming from a taekwondo background, where she holds a black belt, Buys can be best described as a pressure fighter. She loves her striking, especially her kicks, and will constantly try to come forward and overwhelm the opponent with her attacks. Buys also displays some decent wrestling and grappling skills, being able to hold her own on the ground.

In her Dana White’s Contender Series fight against Hilarie Rose, not only did she impress with her strikes, but she had moments that showed a great personality. That’s something UFC President Dana White would be extremely happy to see, and he certainly was, believing Buys has a lot of potential to offer up. And I agree with the UFC head honcho. Just like her husband, Cheyenne is still quite young and has plenty more growth time ahead of her.

Under head coach Sayif Saud at Fortis MMA, Buys has a plethora of talent surrounding her (plus her debuting husband). Buys has impressive striking yet tons of room for improvement. At only 25, this is more based on the potential Buys possesses. The strength, and ability to overpower opponents is promising. Buys dominated her opponent on DWCS, and has competed in LFA and Invicta FC, organizations that require tough fights. Buys has a ton of potential in my eyes and could be a future ranked fighter.

Ahead of her appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series in August of last year, Buys labeled herself as “young, hungry and relentless” and I think she was spot on with that description. While “young” and “hungry” are pretty obvious adjectives here, I place more of my focus on “relentless” considering the fighting style of Buys. She is a very good wrestler and maintains much of the top control over her opponents when the fight gets to the ground. She is also a very good striker who has no problem coming forward with a flurry of punches and kicks that backs her opponents up against the fence with nowhere to go. Buys has a fast and powerful right hand that has put down plenty of women in her career. Overall, Buys is a pretty well-rounded fighter. She has a bright future in the UFC.
